PRODUCTS AT WORK Simple Turn Over Solves the Problem Nestle Beverage markets its Taster's Choice Instant Coffee in clear glass jars. With the clear jar the customer can readily see the color and consistency of the product as it sits on the grocer's shelf. A fact that Nestle customers obviously find appealing, given the popularity of the product.
This marketing strategy has however presented one major problem. The jars are filled full at the plant but the product tends to settle in the warehouse and in transport thus reaching the point of purchase looking as if the jar is not filled to capacity. A sure turn-off to the average shopper.
The solution seemed to be to fill the jars and then store and transport them up-side down until they were finally turned upright as they were placed on the grocer's shelf. The question was how best to do this. The solution has been an In-Line 180 degree Recline/Rotate INVERTER provided by CHERRY'S INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT CORP. of Bensenville, Illinois.
After filling, the jars are placed in tray packs of 12 jars each. Loads comprised of 210 tray packs ( 2500 jars of coffee) are stacked on slip sheets. The loads are transported via conveyor into the inverter. (The inverter will have another slip sheet held in its upper clamping plate) The inverter's clamping plates then secure the load. The load is tilted backward and then rotated 180 degrees. The load is then returned to the level of the conveyor. The jars are now ready for storage and transport. The jars will not be turned upright again until they are placed on the shelf in the store.
The INVERTER has been in operation at Nestle's Freehold, New Jersey plant for over a year now and is performing admirably. The INVERTER turns 90 loads per hour or 250,000 jars of coffee per hour.
