Meat Processing and Freezing Operations.
Industry Proven to be the #1 Spacer Removal System!
- Controls Are Easily Accessible
Control arm swings and pivots to multiple positions, thus allowing the operator to stand anywhere within a large area.- Custom Design
Cherry's is able to design a machine to meet your particular needs and requirements. Larger machines are available to permit consolidation of various size loads.- Floor Level Access
Machine is loaded and unloaded at floor level with entry or removal from either the front or the side.- Adjustable Clamping Plate
Capable of accommodating a wide range of load heights, the clamping plate descends to the top of the load and secures the load before the machine reclines.- Easy Pallet Exchange
With the machine in its reclined position, pallets can be readily exchanged. Pallets pull easily in or out on a built-in roller bed.- Ergonomically Correct Height
A working height of only 28 inches permits rapid removal of freezer spacers, while protecting against back strain.- Fast, efficient loading at ground level
- Permits removal of spacers in just seconds
- Reduces back strain and employee injuries, ultimately lowering insurance costs
- Spacers can be removed from product as soon as frozen and are thus available for re-use
- Preclamping the load breaks the frozen bond between product and spacer
- Eliminates stacking and re-stacking
- Prompt pay-back (often as short as 3 months)
- No more double-handling of product with consequent back and arm injuries
- Tighter control, leading to increased life of spacers and fewer purchases of new ones
The Freezer Spacer Recovery System helps reduce the risk of back strain by providing a comfortable working height of only 28-inch. The controls are easily accessible and adjust to a variety of positions, providing the operator with several options for where to stand. Arm injuries are virtually eliminated as the weight of the load now falls upon the machinery, rather than the handler. After the palletized load is turned to a 90 degree angle, the weight is transferred from the spacers, allowing for easy removal.
HOW IT WORKS TO REMOVE FREEZER SPACERS
- The load is placed in the machine close to the sidewall. The clamp is activated and secures the load.
- The machine tilts 90°, the clamping plate is then released and freezer spacers can easily be pulled out.
- With the spacers removed, the sequence is reversed and the load turned to its original position, ready for removal.

Solve your rental pallet to white pallet exchange the easy way, without the damage. A Cherry's PSM Pallet / Spacer Recovery machine will simply separate the pallet from the bottom of the load. Our clamp to layback process will detach the pallet from the bottom of the load. With the machine in its reclined position, pallets can be readily exchanged by sliding easily in or out on a built-in roller bed. You then simply replace the pallet of choice. Stand up the load to it's original position, pallet exchange is complete.
- This quick and easy retrieval of spacers also allows companies to better maintain control of spacers. In the past, spacers have all too often been shipped with product, because there simply was no time for their removal; however, this system is changing that. Companies are able to maintain tighter control of spacers by eliminating their distribution
- In addition to being both ergonomically and economically viable, the Spacer Recovery System method of removing spacers immediately after freezing is significantly faster than the traditional stacking and restacking of loads.
- With this equipment, freezer spacers can quickly be removed from product after freezing for immediate use. This quick and easy removal before shipping allows for tighter control of spacers which leads to prolonged life of the average freezer spacer.
- There was some risk that particulates could be generated because of the possible splintering of the pallets. Further, other health and safety factors made using of the wooden pallets disadvantageous. So management decided to use plastic pallets for in process handling.
Operation of this system is simple, but efficient. A pallet load is placed into the inverter from ground level. A clamping plate is then activated to secure the load. The load is then turned to a 90 degree angle and the clamping plate is relaxed for easy removal of freezer spacers or pallets.
Perhaps the most versatile feature is that the machine operation is performed at ground level. The Freezer Spacer Recovery machine allows you to use a wide variety of pallet transport equipment
Traditionally, the removal of pallets or freezer spacers has required lifting and restacking of loads. This arduous task involves not only significant time and effort on the part of the employee, but also includes the potential risk of arm injuries and back strain. The Freezer Spacer Recovery machine facilitates the speed of getting the product to market and takes the element of repetitive motion out of the equation. The most obvious benefits are better working conditions and a decrease in injuries. In addition, better working conditions translate to happier and more long-term employees.
Burris Refrigerated Services, a division of Burris Foods, Inc. has recently built a new facility in Benson, NC. This six million cubic foot facility is the newest of five such plants opened since the refrigerated division began in 1987. Other Burris locations are in Sumter, SC, Lyndhurst, VA, Chesapeake, VA, Federalsburg, MD and the Burris Foods Inc. headquarters in Milford, DE.
The Benson, NC facility was designed to provide distribution and refrigeration services for area pork, turkey and chicken producers, offering a blast-freezing capacity of 3.5 million pounds per week. This state of the art, 21st century, 125,000 square foot facility has 15,000 pallet positions. The Benson facility increases Burris' combined total refrigerated space to 30 million cubic feet in the two divisions.
Traditionally, the removal of freezer spacers has required repetitive lifting and restacking of loads. This arduous task involves not only significant time and effort on the part of the employee, but also includes potential risk of arm injuries and back strain. Ergonomics, economics and efficiency in the workplace are issues that repeatedly provide challenges to employers.
The pallet load of frozen product with freezer spacers in place is moved by conveyor from the cold storage area into the Freezer Spacer Removal Machine. With the load in the machine, a clamping plate is then lowered to secure the load. The load is then tipped 90 degrees and the clamping plate is released. With the load now in a tilted position, the product is loosened to a degree that allows the freezer spacers to be easily removed by the operator. Spacers are simply pulled out and stacked to the side with no effort or stress to the employee.
Burris Foods has found a variety of resources that have helped them to gain control of these issues. But one resource is currently revolutionizing their freezing operation the labor-saving, conveyor-fed, Freezer Spacer Removal Machines. These machines are currently in place at their Benson facility and are truly the answer to the problems posed by freezer spacer removal.
Cherry's has a wide variety of machines in use around the world and can custom design a system to meet any particular need. However, Cherry's standard line of Spacer Removal equipment is always in-stock with lease programs available. Free videos are also available In many cases the standard Freezer Spacer Removal Machine is sufficient to do the job but some plants have requested adaptations that more readily suit their individual needs.
With the load in the machine, a clamping plate is then lowered to secure the load. The load is then tipped 90 degrees and the clamping plate is released. With the load now in a tilted position, the product is loosened to a degree that allows the freezer spacers to be easily removed by the operator. Spacers are simply pulled out and stacked to the side, the machine will then stand up the load to it's original position. The fork lift operator will then remove the load from the equipment by approaching between the yellow protection posts.
Our custom designed Pallet / Spacer equipment gives you the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of load heights, widths and weights.
Sanitation and Bacterial Protection Unique values of Stainless Steel The many unique values provided by stainless steel make it a powerful candidate in materials selection. Engineers, specifiers and designers often underestimate or overlook these values because of what is viewed as the higher initial cost of stainless steel. However, over the total life of a project, stainless is often the best value option.
Corrosion resistance: Can resist corrosion in most acids, alkaline solutions, and chlorine bearing environments, properties which are utilized in process plants. Hygiene: The easy cleaning ability of stainless makes it the first choice for strict hygiene conditions, such as food processing plants.
Aesthetic appearance: The bright, easily maintained surface of stainless steel provides a modern and attractive appearance. Stainless steel needs less maintenance and its hygienic qualities means that you do not have to use harsh cleaners to get a clean surface.
Long term value: When the total life cycle costs are considered, stainless is often the least expensive material option.
